Session Description:
Medical educators face a variety of challenges when planning foundational science lectures during Phase I, including: managing the volume of information, deciding what students need to learn in order to move into clinical medicine and successfully pass the USMLE exam, figuring out how the material fits into the context of the course, and teaching at the appropriate level of phase I students. During this session we’ll use common scenarios to explore opportunities and obstacles that faculty face when planning to teach in Phase I. We’ll introduce newly approved Guiding Principles or Phase I Foundational Sciences Education and brainstorm together about how to apply the guidelines in an inclusive and interdisciplinary way.

Education is the key mission of the COM, but higher education in medicine is increasingly resource-constrained. Educators are tasked with creating quality experiences, while department chairs and other institutional leaders are constantly faced with hard decisions about resource allocation. How can Chairs and other leaders, and the educators who work with them, best work together to serve the education mission?
